A letter to my family
Dear family:
It has been a long time since I being with you guys. A month ago, Lily, Leslie and I arrived at California. After wondering around looking for jobs for nearly two weeks, I finally got a job to be a cooker preparing meals for hundreds of Chinese tracklayers here. Lily and Leslie went to a restaurant to be waitresses. We are separated now. The United States plans to establish a really long railway which will connect the western and the eastern part of the nation.
The salary is relatively low here, comparing to those who are not Chinese. But I can still support myself with enough food and clothing. So please don’t worry about me. Chinese people here are really affable, and I have made friends with some of them. There are even three men and a woman who also come from our hometown.
Living here made me recognize that a country could be strong only when its people stand up and fight for their motherland. We Chinese have been looked down by the people from many other countries here, especially the natives. Now I’m trying to learn their language in order to communication with them, and I hope it will be useful in the future. I will come back once I get enough travelling expenses. By then I will join communities to do something for our nation. Hope you all be hopeful for our motherland and take actions as soon as possible to do something helpful.
How’s everything going in our nation and you guys?
Miss you much and looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Sincerely,
Amy
