When I called _______ my mother in the countryside on the telephone she was very upset. “There are some snakes in our courtyard,” she told me. “Snakes come near the house now and then, and they seem ____________(make) their home here, not far from the walnut tree. Can you get rid _____ them please?” I ______(feel) very proud. Here was a chance for me to distinguish myself ______ inventing something ______(mercy) that would catch snakes _____ not harm them. A new approach was ______(clear) needed. I set about ________(research) the habits of snakes to find the easiest way________(trap) them. Prepared with some research ________(find), I decided ____ three possible approaches: firstly, removing their habitat; secondly, attracting them into a trap _________(use) male or female perfume or food; and thirdly cooling them so that ______ would become sleepy and could be easily caught. I decided to use the last one. I bought ____ ice-cream maker which was made of _______(stain) steel. Between the outside ______ the inside walls of the bowl there is some jelly, which _______(freeze) when cooled. I put the bowl into the fridge and ______(wait) for 24 hours. _____ the same time I prepared some ice-cubes.

The next morning I got up early _______ the sun was hot. I placed the _______(freeze) bowl over the snakes’ habitat and the ice-cubes on top of the bowl to keep it cool. Finally I covered the whole thing _____ a large bucket. Then I waited. _______ two hours I removed the bucket and the bowl. The snakes were less active _______they were still too fast for me. They ________(abrupt) disappeared into a convenient hole ______ the wall. ______ I had to adjust my plan.

For the second attempt I ________(freeze) the bowl and the ice-cubes again but placed them over the snakes’ habitat in the evening, as the temperature was starting to cool. Then as before, I covered the bowl with the bucket and left everything overnight. Early the next morning I returned ________(see) the result. This time _____ great caution I bent down to examine the snakes and I found them very sleepy. But once _______(pick) up, they tried to bite me. As they were ________(poison) snakes, I clearly needed to improve my design again.

My third attempt repeated ____ second procedure. The next morning I carried in my hand a small net ______(use) for catching fish. This was in the _________(expectat) that the snakes would bite again. But _______(monitor) carefully, the snakes ________(prove) to be no trouble and all went according ____ plan. I collected the passive snakes and the next day we _______(merry) released them all back into the wild.

________(Press) by my friends and relations, I decided to seize the opportunity to get recognition for my __________(success) idea by sending my _________(invent) to the patent office. Only after you have had that ___________(recognize) can you say that you are ________(true) an inventor. The criteria ______(be) so strict that it is difficult to get new ideas accepted _______ they are truly novel. _____ addition, no invention will get a patent _____ it is:

◎a discovery ◎a _________(science) idea or mathematical model ◎literature _______ art ◎a game or a business

◎a computer programme ◎a new animal or plant _________(various)

________ will you receive a patent until a search has been made to find out that your product really is _________(differ) from everyone else’s. There _____(be) a large number of patent _________(examine), too, _______ only job is to examine whether your claim is valid or not. If it _______(pass) all the tests, your application ______ a patent will be published 18 ________(month) from the date you apply. So I have filled _____ the form and filed my patent application with the Patent Office. Now it’s a matter of ______(wait) and hoping. You’ll know if I succeed by the size of my bank balance! Wish me luck!

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell _________(bear) in 1847 in Scotland, but when he was young his family moved to Boston, USA. It was this exploring around problems and his dynamic spirit _____ led to his most famous invention-the telephone in 1876. Bell never set out _____(invent) the telephone and _____ he was trying to design was a multiple telegraph. This _______(origin) telegraph sent a message over distances ______(use) Morse code (a series of dots ______(tap) out along a wire ____ a particular order). But only one message could go ____ a time. Bell wanted to improve it _____ that it could send several messages at _____ same time. He designed a machine that would separate different sound waves and allow different conversations _________(hold) at the same time. But he found the problem difficult_______(solve). One day as he was _________(experiment) with one end of a straw _______(join) to a deaf man’s ear drum and _____ other to a piece of smoked glass, Bell noticed that when he ________(speak) into the ear, the straw drew sound waves on the glass. Suddenly he had a flash of _______(inspire). If sound waves could __________(reproduce) in a moving electrical current, they could be sent ______ a wire. In searching to improve the telegraph, Bell had invented the first telephone!

Bell was _______(full) aware of the importance of his invention and wrote ____ his father:

“The day is coming _______ telegraph wires will be____(lay) on to houses just like water or gas–and friends will talk to each other _______ leaving home.”

The patent was given in 1876, but it was not until five days later that Bell sent his first telephone message to his ________(assist) Watson. The words have now become famous:

“Mr Watson - come here - I want to see you.”

Alexander Graham Bell was not a man to rest and he interested _______(he) in many other areas of invention. He experimented _______ helicopter designs and flying machines.
